R + J Book Club THIS Sun., 11/19 @ 11:15am w/ the author!! (and OTHER IMPORTANT UMC announcements!)

Hello church!

This is a reminder that we'll be meeting THIS coming Sunday, Nov. 19 for another Race & Justice Book Club meeting, including a special discussion with the author himself, Dr. Russell Jeung!!

See below for more details, along with other Urban Missions Committee announcements.
  • Book Club. Sunday, 11/19 @11:15am
    • Where?  Pastor Larry's office or the Green Room (depending on space/#s)
    • What?  We'll be talking about At Home in Exile: Finding Jesus among My Ancestors and Refugee Neighbors (WebsiteAmazon), a spiritual memoir by Dr. Russell Jeung, a professor at San Francisco State University. He and his family (Dr. JJ and his son Matthew) attended CCFC for a year while visiting Boston. He has lived in refugee communities for the past 25 years, and his foster daughters are refugees from Burma. With Dr. JJ, he has also conducted needs assessments of several refugee and undocumented communities.
    • Why? The book clubs are an extension of our (annual) Race and Justice speaker series in the spring. We're hoping these meetings can be a space for us to talk in smaller group settings about particular issues in the world, in America, at our church, and in our lives.
    • How? We start each meeting with a recap of the book (with notes), and we'll let conversation naturally flow from there.
    • But? You don't need to read the book to join, but I've been told reading the book will enhance your experience. :)

  • UPCOMING MEETINGS
    • NEXT WEEK!
      • 11/26 @ 11:15am -- monthly UMC meeting. May include some hot cocoa and other holiday treats... :D
    • December. No regular meeting, because it conflicts with baby Jesus's birthday (according to Constantine), but smaller group teams will be scheduling their own meetings.

  • PARTAKERS LAUNCH!
    • What? Partakers is an awesome program that pairs up individuals who are currently incarcerated with mentors to help them as they pursue a college degree. CCFC is now at Step 3 of putting together mentoring teams!
    • Who? We've had enough folks respond with interest and commitment to move forward with forming 3 teams!!
    • Next steps?
      • Teams are in the processing of choosing their locations and then being paired with their match.
      • If you're interested, it's still possible to sign up! Fill out this survey to get more information.
      • If you're not able to commit to being a mentor but still want to be involved somehow, stay tuned for future opportunities to support our CCFC teams!
